Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه
Generosity with an Open Hand
Talhah grew wealthy through trade and land in Iraq, and he became known for giving. The classical biographers report that the Prophet ﷺ gave him the names Talhat al-Khayr and Talhat al-Fayyad, "Talhah of the good" and "the overflowing", because of his generosity.
One report tells of a night when a large sum arrived from his estates in Hadramawt, and his wife saw him anxious and unable to sleep. He said he was worried about what a man might think of his Lord if the man slept while such money sat in his house. He distributed all of it before dawn.
He also paid the debts of those in need and looked after relatives of his clan who were struggling. Giving, for Talhah, was less a decision than a habit.
Wealth that passes through your hands to others is safer than wealth that settles in your house.
What is one regular act of giving you could make a habit rather than a decision?
