Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah رضي الله عنه
The Last Years in Syria
Sa'd lived on for a few years after the Prophet ﷺ's death. The reports say he moved to Syria, to the region of Hawran, where he died around 15 AH in the caliphate of 'Umar, though some sources give other dates. He did not take up arms against the caliphs, and no sound report says that he did.
A popular account says he was found dead after being killed by the jinn, and that a verse was heard in the night, naming him. Scholars regard this story as unreliable, though Ibn Sa'd recorded it; it is an embellishment, and what is certain is only that he died in Syria and was buried there.
His son Qays ibn Sa'd became one of the most capable and loyal men of the next generation, and is remembered for his generosity and shrewdness. The Ansar remembered Sa'd as a chief who gave generously, who held firm in his view, and who, whatever his disappointment, left the community whole.
A person's character is judged not only by what he wanted but by what he refrained from doing when he did not get it.
When something you hoped for was denied, what did you choose not to do?
