Umm Kulthum bint 'Ali رضي الله عنها
The Youngest of Fatimah's Children
Umm Kulthum was born in Madinah to 'Ali and Fatimah, the younger of their two daughters. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr reports that she was born before the Prophet ﷺ died, so she was among his grandchildren who knew him, if only as a very small child.
In 11 AH she lost her grandfather ﷺ and then her mother. She bore the same name as her aunt, Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad, who had died two years earlier, and she grew up in 'Ali's house beside al-Hasan, al-Husayn and her sister Zaynab.
Umm Kulthum shared the name of an aunt who died while she was very young; in the Prophet's ﷺ family, the names of those who had gone lived on in the children.
