Umm Habibah — Ramlah bint Abi Sufyan رضي الله عنها
The Folded Bed
When Quraysh's allies broke the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, Abu Sufyan travelled to Madinah to try to repair it. The historians report that he went first to the house of his daughter, Umm Habibah, whom he had not seen in many years.
As he went to sit on the Prophet's ﷺ bedding, she folded it up and moved it away from him. Puzzled, he asked whether she thought the bed too good for him, or him too good for the bed. She answered that it was the bed of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was a man still in idolatry, and she would not have him sit on it. He told her that evil had come over her since she left him.
It was not that she did not love her father. But her loyalty to the Messenger ﷺ, and to the faith she had held on to alone, came first. Within months, Makkah opened to the Muslims, and Abu Sufyan himself accepted Islam.
Umm Habibah honoured her father as a daughter, but she would not let even him take the place that belonged to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
