Khadijah bint Khuwaylid رضي الله عنها
The Pure One of Makkah
Khadijah was the daughter of Khuwaylid ibn Asad, of the Quraysh clan of Banu Asad, and her line met the Prophet's ﷺ a few generations back at Qusayy. Her cousin was Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a man who had left idol worship and read the earlier scriptures.
Twice before Islam she had been married, and twice widowed: once to Abu Halah of Banu Tamim and once to 'Atiq ibn 'A'idh of Banu Makhzum, and she had children from those marriages. She did not withdraw from life. She managed a trading fortune of her own, sending caravans north to Syria and south to Yemen with men she hired.
In a city where wealth often went with arrogance and idol feasts, she was known by a name that tells us how people saw her: al-Tahirah, the pure one. Many of the noblemen of Quraysh asked to marry her, and she turned them down.
Allah prepared the Prophet's ﷺ first companion long before the revelation, through a life of integrity in an unjust society.
What would people call you, in one word, if they described how you live when no one is checking?
