Al-Hasan ibn 'Ali رضي الله عنه
Quiet Years and a Peaceful Burial
Al-Hasan returned to Madinah and lived there for about nine more years, known for his generosity, his forbearance and his worship. The biographers report that he made the pilgrimage on foot many times, and that he gave away his wealth in charity more than once.
He died in Madinah in 49 or 50 AH. Many historians report that he was poisoned; who was behind it is not established, and scholars such as Ibn Kathir and Ibn Taymiyyah judged the accusations against Mu'awiyah unproven. The biographers also report that he asked to be buried beside his grandfather ﷺ only if this would cause no strife; when there was objection, his family buried him in al-Baqi', beside his mother Fatimah.
He had ended a war with a peace treaty; at his death too, he did not want a single fight over his grave.
The man who ended a civil war asked, even in death, that no strife be caused for his sake.
What would it look like to choose peace even when you are in the right?
