'A'ishah bint Abi Bakr رضي الله عنها
Teacher of the Ummah
For nearly fifty years after the Prophet ﷺ, 'A'ishah's room in Madinah was a school. She narrated over two thousand hadiths, more than any other woman, and much of what we know of his prayer at night, his fasting, his ghusl and his life at home comes through her. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari said that whenever a hadith puzzled the Companions and they asked 'A'ishah, they found she had knowledge of it.
She did not only transmit; she corrected with evidence. When she heard it reported that the dead are punished for their family's weeping, she said the Prophet ﷺ had said it of a particular unbeliever, and recited, ﴿وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى﴾ (“No bearer of burdens bears the burden of another”) (6:164; Sahih al-Bukhari 1288). Scholars later gathered her corrections of other Companions into whole books.
Her nephew 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, who studied under her, said he never saw anyone more learned in the Qur'an, the obligations, the lawful and unlawful, poetry, Arab history or lineage. And she gave as freely as she taught: it is reported that she once distributed a large gift of money in a single day while fasting, keeping nothing back for her own meal.
Knowledge in Islam has always had women among its greatest carriers; and true scholarship weighs every report against the Qur'an.

What the hadith grades mean
- Sahih (authentic): an unbroken chain of trustworthy, precise narrators, free of hidden flaws or contradiction. It is acted upon.
- Hasan (good): like sahih, but a narrator's precision is slightly lighter. It is also accepted and acted upon. "Hasan sahih" means it reaches sahih by its routes.
- Da'if (weak): a break in the chain or a narrator who is not reliable enough. It is not used to establish beliefs or rulings.
- Very weak (munkar, matruk): a seriously flawed chain or a narrator accused of lying. It is not relied on at all.
- Mawdu' (fabricated): falsely attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. It may not be narrated as his words except to warn against it.
- The two Sahihs: every hadith with a full chain in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim is accepted as sahih by the scholars of hadith.
- Historical report: biographies and histories (Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabari) record events with chains that are often incomplete. They are used for the story, not for rulings.
- Hadith scholars grade a narration; the four madhhabs do not. Where a hadith carries a ruling, the page shows which schools act on it.
