Umm Ayman (Barakah) رضي الله عنها
The Long Walk to Madinah
Umm Ayman married 'Ubayd ibn Zayd of Madinah, who died; later she married Zayd ibn Harithah, and bore him Usamah. She emigrated to Madinah soon after the Prophet ﷺ.
A report tells of her journey: she travelled on foot with no companion and no provisions, and at al-Rawha' she was nearly dead of thirst while fasting. Then a bucket on a white rope was let down from the sky, and she drank until she was satisfied. She said afterwards that she never felt thirst again, and would fast in the heat of midday to try to feel it.
Whether or not every detail is held fast, the picture is clear: an older freedwoman making the long road on foot for her religion.
Faith in difficulty does not depend on strength or status; Allah's help reaches the weakest traveller.
What journey for the sake of Allah have you postponed because it was inconvenient?
