The Rings of the Helmet
At Uhud the Prophet ﷺ was struck in the face and two rings from his helmet were driven into his cheek. Abu Bakr rushed toward him, and Abu 'Ubaydah got there at the same time.
Abu 'Ubaydah asked Abu Bakr to let him do it. He pulled at the first ring with his teeth and drew it out, and his front tooth fell out. He then pulled the second ring, and lost another tooth. The biographers say that he became more handsome for the missing teeth, and that he gave them up for the sake of the Prophet's ﷺ comfort.
A frequently quoted report also says that at Badr, Abu 'Ubaydah's own father kept pressing toward him on the other side, and when he would not turn away, Abu 'Ubaydah killed him; and that verse 58:22 was revealed about this. The story shows how faith can outweigh even the closest bond of blood.
Love for the Messenger ﷺ shows itself in small, painful acts of care.
