'Abdullah ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنه
The Last Pilgrimage
'Abdullah lived long and was among the last of the senior Companions. He performed the pilgrimage many times and gave rulings for the people for some sixty years after the Prophet's passing, and narrated more than two thousand reports.
In 73 AH, in the pilgrimage during the struggle between 'Abd al-Malik's governor al-Hajjaj and 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, he was wounded in the foot at Mina, reportedly by the point of a spear in the crowd. Al-Hajjaj came to visit him, and Ibn 'Umar, then in his eighties, is reported to have been brief and unflinching with him.
He died a few months later in Makkah and was buried outside the sanctuary at Fakhkh or Dhu Tuwa, since he had wanted not to be buried in the land he had left in migration. His life was remembered as a lesson in humility, caution and love of the Sunnah.
A long life of careful devotion leaves behind a living example that outlasts the person.
